What are the spiritual issues behind the political and economic challenges of today? Spook Handy was commissioned to write a song for a documentary about the belief that these are end times. The result was a question: "If it's true, whatcha gonna do? Will you send your neighbor's son to war or find a way to help the poor. So many souls in times of need. So many mouths to feed. Or will you feed the fear of boom? It's up to you. Whatcha Gonna Do?"
This is quintessential Spook Handy – sometimes witty, sometimes poignant. The music is upbeat. The spiritual points are subtle yet deep. The songs paint pictures and tell stories about the world we live in today. The stories raise questions that aren’t heard often enough in public discourse. Yet, one question seems to be on everybody’s mind. "Whatcha Gonna Do?"
The spirit of American folk music, its passion and sense of purpose, ring loud and clear in these songs and its message seems more relevant today than ever. Pete Seeger calls “Death Came Anyway” a “great song” and says “Spook Handy really knows how to write a good song that says something important.” If he didn’t mean it, he wouldn’t sing one of Spook’s songs at concerts and festivals.
