If you think the flavors of grilling can’t possibly get any better, think again. Organic meats, vegetables and spices can maximize the flavor of your favorite cheeseburger, shish kebab or philly steak without the added pesticides and hormones. Pair your meal with a local organic wine or beer and you’ve got the makings of a barbecue that will make your neighbors “green” with envy. While most large supermarkets now offer at least some organic products, there are two other great resources that will help you support local farmers or vendors in the process. Farmers’ markets: Colorado is ripe with farmers’ markets and during the summer months, you can’t beat the variety, freshness or price. Your best starting resource is www.coloradofarmers.org. The Web site lists farmers’ markets by town, including the address, days and times of operation, and vendors. Buying online or on-site: Have a certain product in mind that you can’t find in your supermarket? There are countless Colorado organic vendors that deliver right to your door, or, if you’re within driving distance, many farmers, vineyards and brewers sell direct on-site (or through Community Supported Agriculture programs). Here are a few Web sites to get your mouth watering: www.cureorganicfarm.com (vegetables, eggs, honey) www.elafamilyfarms.com (fruits, jams, cider, nectars) www.grantfarms.com (vegetables, beans, alfalfa, wheat) www.greenearthfarm.com (potatoes, quinoa, vegetables, alfalfa) www.jackrabbithill.com (organically grown wines) www.kokopelliproduce.com (fruit) www.largavistaranch.com (beef, pork, vegetables) www.lgbeef.com (beef) www.pachamamafarm.com (vegetables) www.peakbrewing.com (organic beer) www.princessbeef.com (beef) www.roundearth.com (vegetables) www.stonebridgefarmcsa.com (vegetables) Of course, you may have some unwanted guests at your outdoor barbecue. Don’t forget your local, non-toxic, biodegradable insect repellant! (www.rageenterprises.com).
