Bobbie Flexer: Exercising the mind, body and spirit
Bobbie Flexer is a believer in both lifelong learning and lifelong teaching.
A former mathematics education and statistics professor at the School of Education at CU, she specialized and did research in elementary math education. “I also did a lot of work with math teachers all over Colorado,” she says. “I’m delighted and proud to tell you that among my former students are many great teachers, math leaders and school administrators.”
Although she still belongs to Colorado Math Leaders, gives occasional talks at teachers’ conventions, and continues to work on special assignments at C.U., much of her time is now dedicated to her other passion: learning new things.
“I take three senior fitness classes at the East Boulder Senior Center with Melissa Pruitt; the Miracle Workout, Fit Ball, and Fit and Strong Intermediate. I started taking fitness classes over six years ago after retiring from CU. It’s one of my most favorite activities, and I’m hooked on exercise. Many class members have been coming for years–a terrific bunch, mostly women, with a few brave men joining us at various times. The classes are really fun, appropriately challenging, and great workouts. Someone once suggested that our class become the half-time entertainment at CU football games--a pretty hilarious image.”
In addition to exercise classes, Bobbie keeps busy with classes at the Academy for Lifelong Learning in Denver. She’s taken courses in economics, and is now taking one on Africa and another on art in public places. She and her husband spend time working on projects like math exhibits for children’s museums, attending local concerts, visiting museums, and traveling abroad with Elderhostel. “We’ve gone to France, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands for art courses and to Germany and Austria for music.”
Her advice to other seniors?
“Try one of Melissa Pruitt’s exercise classes—they’re the greatest. She’s able to modify exercises so they can be done by most anyone, even those with an aching joint or two. You’ll enjoy the workouts, get stronger, and feel better. Also, take advantage of events and trips offered by the Senior Centers.”
