Building Bridges to Peace

Fate. Destiny. Intentional synchronicity. Whatever you call it, Heather Kassman and Sheila Kelly were meant to cross paths. Four years ago, both were working at the Mountain Resource Center in Conifer, Heather as a counselor with survivors of domestic violence and Sheila with youth services. Eventually, the two learned that they shared a goal to create more peaceful communities through healthy relationships and in 2003, Bridges to Peace, LLC was born.

With over 30 years combined experience in youth empowerment, social activism and violence prevention, it’s no surprise that much of the organization’s work has focused on children and teens.
“We work with both youth and adults in violence prevention, leadership, issues of respect – for self and others, staff development and community activism,” explains Heather. “Much of our work is done through education in classrooms, but we also lead community forums, professional workshops and personal growth retreats.”

Just a few of the issues that Bridges to Peace tackles include healthy relationships, bullying, body image, dating violence and conflict.

“Self esteem plays into all of our work,” says Sheila, who sometimes uses her professional belly dancing skills to lead girls in dance, followed by candid discussions on body image. “Additionally, we talk about dating violence awareness and how to build healthy relationships with yourself and others. We recognize that it takes a holistic approach to create long-lasting change.”

Apparently, the organization is fulfilling its mission. Last year Heather and Sheila were honored with an “Outstanding Women of Jefferson County” award for their work in the community. So what’s next for Bridges for Peace?

“We plan on holding more retreats for women, and mothers and daughters,” says Sheila. “We hope to have some lined up for late summer/early fall.”

“We also enjoy working with organizations that understand the value of youth – youth groups, clubs, schools, leadership organizations,” explains Heather. “We also look forward to more key note speaking at conferences. The beauty of this work is that we can tailor our program to client needs.”
