Building community with intergenerational programs

Connie Hein

Rainbow Bridge is a nonprofit, charitable organization co-founded by Linda Holloway and Sharron Brandup and is dedicated to improving the quality of life for elders in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. According to Linda, “It is the only organization in the country with our particular focus – bringing community participation into nursing homes through volunteer programs.”

The largest of the Rainbow Bridge programs is the Youth and Elders Program. Last year they trained and worked with over 3,000 youth from schools, scouts, churches, and community organizations, as well as at-risk youth programs. These youths were able to enhance the lives of almost 5,000 elders. The often forgotten elders and at-risk youth of our society give to each other what each so desperately needs; companionship, compassion, understanding, and a sense of value and purpose.

The other programs offered through Rainbow Bridge are the Family and Elders Program, the Community and Elders Program, and the Dreams Can Still Come True Program. These intergenerational programs help break down the myths and stereotypes that result from societal separation of the generations. Nursing home/assisted living elders who frequently have little sense of purpose find new meaning in their lives as generations come together to learn and grow through each other's experiences.

As a small nonprofit, Rainbow Bridge depends on foundation grants, event sponsorships, and donations from individuals and corporations to continue their much-needed work. They are currently searching for corporate partners that would benefit from aligning themselves with this worthwhile cause.

Margaret Mead said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” The committed citizens participating in Rainbow Bridge are doing just that; changing the world and its attitudes about at-risk youths, as well as the elderly of our world one life at a time.
