Home Accessories Advice

At her Minturn store, Details Home Accessories, Laurie Ramirez helps local homeowners enhance their residences with decorative pieces in several styles. She carries an eclectic mix of contemporary, Southwestern and “mountain Western” accessories—from pieces of pottery and clever wall hangings to accent furniture and fine art.

We asked this home-décor expert for her advice on accessorizing the home. Ramirez shared these simple, but helpful tips:

• Adding a bright color with your accessories is the easiest way to make a change. A bright-red glass vase, colorful pillows, even changing the color of the candles can help.

• Not sure what colors you should add to existing décor? Try green or red with a black-and-white theme. This year’s hot colors are wine, paprika and mustard—add these to your neutrals. Mix ice blue with your brown, and add soft greens to just about anything!

• When mixing wood species, use two to three varieties and with purpose; don’t haphazardly mix and match.

• When grouping a collection of items, create an emphasis on one object and cluster others to that primary object.

• The old rule of odd numbers works well for collections (a grouping of same objects), but try even numbers for a variety of different objects.

• Lean a mirror or art piece on the fireplace mantle, not on center, then offset with a sculptural piece to the other side.
