 0 comment(s)

The City of Loveland Art in Public Places Program seeks six sculptures to be placed in Downtown Loveland as part of The Art Advocacy Project (TAAP).  The City of Loveland continues its commitment to supporting artists through TAAP. New and established Colorado artists are encouraged to be a part of this one-year sculpture exhibition scheduled from May 2010-May 2011. Selected artists will be awarded an honorarium of $500. Loveland citizens will choose the People’s Choice designation and the selected artwork receive a special recognition plaque.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION IS MARCH 26, 2010.

Artists must own the rights to the artwork and the sculpture must be available for the duration of the one-year contract. All submissions must be professionally constructed of durable materials which will withstand the elements.

Submission details: Please attach three images per submission that clearly show a front and back view, and one detail shot. Artists may submit more than one sculpture for consideration, but each submission must have three images attached.  Please give all dimensions and a stated insurance value for the artwork. There are presently no restrictions on size; however, artists should be aware that sculptures will be placed within a well-traveled shopping/gallery streetscape on a 3 ½’ x 3 ½’ plinth.  The installation method for each sculpture should be welded tabs or similar easy-install method.

A citizen selection panel will work with the City of Loveland Visual Arts Commission to determine the six finalists.  Additionally, the artwork may be available for sale. The City of Loveland will install a recognition plaque indicating the title, medium, artist and contact phone number for purchasing artwork. All sculptures will be listed on the Art in Public Places web pages and within all TAAP promotional material.

Selected artists are responsible for transportation of the artwork to and from the installation site. The City is responsible for all costs for materials and workmanship for the initial installation of the Artwork, including, but not limited to, final site preparation, plinth, cleanup and repair of any damage caused during installation.

NEW MTV SERIES SHOOTS AT DENVER HIGH SCHOOL

Denver School of the Arts (DSA) to be part of new MTV series, “If You Really Knew Me” based on the work of Challenge Day. Described by MTV as a real life 'Breakfast Club', the series follows five high school students from different cliques (jocks, geeks, brains, etc)  through "Challenge Day", a one-day program designed to break down barriers.  MTV has ordered 12 episodes.

According to Tony Di Santo, president of MTV programming, the new series "breaks down the wall of cliques in high schools and brings kids together". This day is made possible by Challenge Denver, a local not for profit organization which provides 11 Denver Public Schools with Challenge Day and weekly follow-up.  Challenge Denver  assumes that many of the issues facing teens, such as stereotyping, racism, sexism, and the use of drugs and alcohol, are caused and exacerbated by isolation. The work of Challenge Denver is aimed at counteracting these causes and fostering respect, tolerance, and self-acceptance, with the ultimate goal of improving participants lives and creating safer schools, thereby increasing school attendance, retention, and graduation.

Denver School of the Arts is the only Colorado school being filmed and was chosen because of its unique student body and long standing partnership with Challenge Denver.  Local rapper, social activist, Challenge Denver supporter and former DSA teacher, James Lurie from The Flobots, is volunteering as an adult facilitator for the day.

Stock Show Steer Receives Royal Treatment at The Brown Palace Hotel

On Friday, Jan. 22, the National Western Stock Show’s 2010 Grand Champion Steer will be escorted down a red carpet to be put on display during afternoon tea in The Brown Palace Hotel and Spa’s lobby. The prize winning steer will be adorned with a garland of roses and will drink from a sterling silver punch bowl while hundreds of city slickers gather for a glimpse before he heads to the Auction of Junior Champions to be sold that evening.

Complimentary photos with the Grand Champion will be taken from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Rodeo royalty will also be on site for photos and autographs. Open to the public.

The steer’s visit to The Brown is one of many appearances made by livestock in the hotel. In 1945, Dan Thornton, who later became governor of Colorado, arranged to have two Hereford bulls shown and sold here for $50,000. In January 1958, Monte Montana clattered into the lobby on his horse “Rex” and continued up the grand staircase to drop in on a meeting of the Rodeo Cowboys Association. In 1988, Gary Henry and “Bubba,” a Texas Longhorn steer, arrived at the front desk to signal the beginning of the National Western Stock Show.

The Brown Palace Hotel and Spa is a Forbes Four-Star, AAA Four-Diamond luxury landmark located in the heart of downtown Denver. It is a charter member of National Trust Historic Hotels of America and is managed by Quorum Hotels & Resorts, a full service management company headquartered in Dallas. For more information or to make reservations please call (303) 297-3111, (800) 321-2599 or visit www.brownpalace.com.
