San Diego: Something for every vacation style
San Diego: Something for every vacation style
Whether it’s Kenny Loggins’ “Danger Zone,” Berlin’s “Take My Breath Away,” or The Righteous Brothers’ “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling,” I think most of us would agree that the 1999 major motion picture “Top Gun” reigns as one of the great classic films of its time.

Recently, while on a business trip to San Diego, I came across the infamous Kansas City Barbeque Top Gun Bar where the famous sleazy bar scene from the movie “Top Gun” was filmed. It housed some great memorabilia and boasted some pretty good ribs too! And it was only steps away from my hotel — The Embassy Suites, San Diego (great location I might add, also within walking distance to the train station and SeaPort Village shops and dining; and minutes away from the ocean and naval museums) — not to mention, a wonderful variety of cooked-to-order breakfast foods is also included with your room rate.

But that’s only one of the many sights that San Diego, the beautiful picturesque city of southern California on San Diego Bay, has to offer. In between meetings I opted for a complete two-hour city tour by way of Old Towne San Diego Trolley. (If you’re dining in Old Towne, a stop into Café Coyote for the homemade, made-fresh-daily flour tortillas is a must!) This great open-air trolley (akin to the trolleys of San Francisco) offered a great narrated tour of the city and its history, allowing passengers to hop on and off throughout its multiple stops (22 in total, I think). It’s a great way to get a good overview of what San Diego has to offer — including Balboa Park; the famous San Diego Zoo; a multitude of free museums; Coronado Island (home to the famed and luxurious Hotel Del Coronado); golfing; fishing; whale watching; Seal Tours; The San Diego Wild Animal Park; Sea World; surfing and more!

Certainly the two and a half days I attended meetings in this beautiful city didn’t afford me the luxury to see and experience it properly. There’s a certain calmness that overtakes you when you enter San Diego, and more shops and dining experiences than you can count. Next time I’m bringing the family with me, and I learned that you can even take the Amtrak Train between San Diego and Anaheim. Perhaps on my next trip the family and I will start out in Anaheim and take in a few days at Disney’s Happiest Place on Earth — Disneyland. Then we’ll adventure down by train for a relaxing few days in San Diego. I hear that the train is an awesome 2.5-hour coastal experience that the kids would really enjoy. And of course, it gives Mom and Dad a break from the crowded southern California highways. Actually, I think the pairing of these two destinations has a lot to offer both the kids and Mom and Dad. Yes, a southern California vacation will be our next family adventure!
