The Broadmoor Waltz Club celebrates 70 years of elegance
In our busy world of cell phones, over-scheduling and multi-tasking, the Broadmoor Viennese Waltz Club recalls a more elegant age of leisure.

Six times a year, ladies in flowing gowns and gentlemen in black tie alternately swirl to the strains of the Waltz Club Orchestra and then gracefully follow the steps of a patterned dance. This year is exceptionally spectacular, as the local group celebrates its 70th anniversary on April 18 – making it the oldest continuous Viennese waltz association in the United States.

Still held in their original location - the magnificent grand ballroom of the Broadmoor Hotel – the fall and winter monthly waltzes include 12 dances.

“Visitors are always welcome to watch,” says the club’s Chair, Kurt Nelson, “and many develop enough of an interest to want to learn.” That’s where he and his wife Loretta come in. The couple teaches free classes at the Austin Bluffs Community Church weekly.

“We get couples of all ages, from their 20s to their 80s” says Loretta. “For some, it’s a date night. It’s a great way for couples to recommit their relationships and many say it’s been great for their marriage. Even the men, who are often resistant at first, end up loving it.”

Kurt and Loretta, who have been dancing with the club for 10 years, have also found that dancing has been a great way to meet new people. In fact, the couple recalls one story in particular:

“When our son started taking lessons, we asked him to pair up with a woman who had attended alone. He was hesitant at first, so we told him, ‘Just dance with her. It’s not like you have to MARRY her.’ Well, he danced with her and eventually they DID get married. That’s how romantic waltzing is.”

For couples interested in joining the club, the annual membership cost is $200 per couple. A schedule of club events or free classes is available by calling 719-598-2885 or by visiting www.broadmoorwaltzclub.com.
