The Center for the Arts Evergreen
“To promote and cultivate artistic excellence in the visual and performing arts in order to enrich the art experience in the mountain community.”

The above statement isn’t just the mission of the Center for the Arts Evergreen (CAE), it’s a guiding principle for everyone who’s involved with the nonprofit. Organized 34 years ago by a grassroots cultural group, CAE’s traditions and commitments hold strong today. Each program, each activity, and the year-round vision for the Center all derive from its mission statement. The acquisition of a permanent 3,000-square-foot building in 2003 has enabled the CAE to provide a full schedule of arts activities, and serve as a gathering place for artists, students and the art-loving community of Evergreen and the mountain community.

The Center for the Arts Evergreen is located in the beautiful wooded Buchanan Park, just off Highway 74 and Squaw Pass Road. The Center consists of three gallery spaces, a multi-media arts classroom, a ceramics studio, outdoor work area, and administrative offices, and is surrounded by an outdoor sculpture garden. The exhibition schedule of the Center is designed to bring to Evergreen a breadth of aesthetic influences throughout the year in order both to celebrate the talents of local artists and art groups and to bring to the community a variety of regional, national and international influences in the visual arts.

CAE sponsors year-long educational programming for both children and adults. The constituent classes include art techniques in a multitude of art mediums and not only demonstrate how-we-do-it in art-making, but also explain why we make art. The Center helps to enrich the arts in the community by awarding “Arts in the Schools Grants” to local art teachers, and art scholarships to deserving high school graduates. CAE also works closely with area arts organizations to promote and foster all the visual and performing arts in the mountain community. The Brown Bag luncheon series brings to the Center scholars, artists, writers and practitioners who engage the audience in many thought-provoking topics, as do the periodic artists’ gallery talks and presentations. Even the Center’s annual fund raisers like “100 for $100,” “A Night for the Arts,” and “Treasure Hunt” bring out crowds wanting to engage in and with art and to help the Center meet its mission.

Throughout the year, free arts activities sponsored by the Center prove to be popular programs designed to appeal to all ages – from toddlers to senior citizens. Some of the Center’s most popular activities are “Art at the Lake,” a creative summertime experience for parents and kids creating together; and “Winterfest,” a holiday celebration of art and music and a great place to both buy and make your own holiday gifts. Another extremely popular annual event is “Paint, Sculpt, Shoot Evergreen,” a month-long event filled with opportunities for beginning to advanced artists alike in the medium of their choice while also enjoying artful camaraderie, the thrill of creating directly from the landscape, and the opportunity to then exhibit their creations at the Center and compete for prizes.
However, the blockbuster event of the entire year is the Summerfest Arts Festival. This year’s Summerfest promises to be even more exciting as the event moves to Buchanan Park and partners with the Evergreen Parks and Recreation District. Over 130 artists, performers, vendors, and a myriad of fun activities for both children and adults will guarantee an amazing weekend. So come join us July 19th and 20th for an experience like no other on Colorado’s Front Range. We look forward to seeing you at SUMMERFEST 2008!
