Our landscape climate is ever changing in Colorado Springs. Continued growth, ongoing water restrictions, new plant selections, and changes to landscape technology are all contributing to an evolving landscape here in the Pikes Peak area. These are all reasons to consider consulting a landscape professional.
As homes get built closer together in our region, we have less space for large shade trees. Plantings of new varieties of small ornamental trees are overtaking plantings of large ash and maple varieties. Plants that use less water and plants that are grouped with other plants of similar water needs are dominating the new landscapes.
Soil amendments are required by Colorado Springs Utilities before a watering permit for new sod can be obtained. This soil amendment requirement for new turf, along with soil amendments for plantings and mulches, has become the mainstay of gardening in our area.
Drip system technology has expanded to include almost all plants in the typical yard. Rain sensors and water budgets help newer clocks govern the precipitation used by the typical landscape. New varieties of trees, shrubs and perennials help beautify the garden and add unique interest. These new plants can be found at local nurseries.
Remember that as the season changes, so do the interest and characteristics of these different plants. Picking plants throughout the season allows the inexperienced gardener to find plants to highlight the garden through the year, thus maximizing the visual impact of the garden.
