| The Town of Eagle |
|
|
The Town of Eagle is a rapidly growing, active community of around 6,000 residents who have one thing in common: they love living in a place with clear blue skies, beautiful scenery and a friendly small-town feel. Add to this equation year-round recreational opportunity and you have a great place to visit, raise a family, or just spend your vacation challenging yourself on some of nature’s finest playgrounds.
Nearly 80 percent of the land around Eagle is national forest, designated wilderness area and open space. Situated near the town is a portion of the White River National Forest and a recreational wonder called Sylvan Lake State Park.
While construction is seen everywhere in this booming valley, the big news in town these days is the main street makeover. Broadway, Eagle’s main street, was rebuilt with landscaping, shrubs, boulders and raised planters that reflect the unique beauty of the surrounding mountains. The project was completed July 2007, and it creates a beautiful setting for shopping, dining or just relaxing. Mayor Jon Stavney explains, “The Broadway redevelopment represents a positive step in addressing the issues of an aging downtown. This will improve the appearance of historic Eagle and demonstrates a long-term commitment to our community’s vital downtown area. In addition, this project has created more interest in having events in the downtown area such as Flight Days, Showdown Town concerts, Potatopalooza and other festivals.”
Eagle continues to improve town amenities by completing a two-year project revamping the Eagle Town Park. The successful summer concert series took advantage of the new stage in the park, and now visitors can enjoy new walkways, a boulder play area for kids, new restrooms, horseshoe pits and a new basketball court. The existing pool and ice rink in Eagle is complemented by a bike skills park and will soon see the addition of two new tennis courts. Eagle recently acquired more open space that will improve trail connections and add to the miles of easily accessible hiking and biking trails near town.
With unprecedented amenities, improvements and additions all around, who would have thought that a town of 6,000 people could have so much? Eagle is well on its way to being the greatest small town in America.
Town of Eagle
In 1840, John C. Freemont led an expedition to map the trails of the West all the way to the Pacific Ocean. The party was lead by retired Brig. Gen. Kit Carson, who brought them through the Eagle River Valley and across a Ute Indian hunting and fishing ground. This beautiful stop along the trail to the Pacific became the town of Eagle, and the town of Eagle became the county seat for Eagle County in 1921.
During World War II, the legendary 10th Mountain Division trained in the Eagle valley; after the war, some of the troops returned to fulfill their dream of making skiing a part of the American culture. The area has flourished ever since.
Today, the Town of Eagle is a growing community of around 6,000 residents surrounded by some of the most magnificent landscape in the world. About a third of the population is 18 or younger, so this town has a very youthful energy. With a median family income of over $62,750 and almost zero unemployment, it’s easy to see why the town is growing so quickly.
You’ll enjoy shopping the unique boutiques and dining at one of the great restaurants along the newly renovated streetscape on Broadway. Then, head over to Eagle Ranch for a round of golf, visit the Castle Peak Shops, or ride the bike path. There you’ll find tree-lined streets, picket fences, big front porches and a safe environment where kids can ride their bikes or walk to school. Whether you spend a day in Eagle or a lifetime, you’re sure to fall in love with its character and charm.
Eagle Information Center
You’ll find a knowledgeable staff, plenty of area maps and brochures, 24-hour restrooms and all the free coffee you can drink at the Eagle Information Center off of Interstate I-70 at Exit 147 in Eagle. Look for the red and white building in Chambers Park on Fairgrounds Road.
The Information Center is much more than just a spot to get directions or learn the scoop on local attractions and events. Since the building is a certified state information center, you’ll find brochures not only on Eagle County, but other Western Slope communities as well.
Check out the fish and game room, where more than 30 different species of local wildlife are on display – from the eagles that make their home in area mountains to the trout that inhabit the local rivers. Stop by the gift shop to purchase guidebooks, souvenirs and some of the tastiest sweet treats around: Golden Eagle Chocolates.
Also in Chambers Park, you’ll find picnic tables for an al fresco meal and a spot to walk your dog after a long stretch in the car. Tour the original Avon country store and blacksmith shop; kids love to climb on the historic caboose.
The Eagle Information Center is adjacent to the Eagle County Historical Society Museum, housed in the old Chambers family dairy barn. It features historic artifacts and documents the history of the Eagle River Valley from the early Native Americans to the families living in the county today.
The folks who staff the Information Center and Historical Society Museum are a wealth of knowledge about the area. You can ask them for advice on where to eat, what local trails to hike and what’s happening in town over the weekend. At the same time, many are history buffs, who would love to share their perspectives on how the valley has changed over past decades. Don’t hesitate to ask these friendly folks anything about the area—chances are, they’ll have some brilliant answers for you. And if they don’t, they’ll certainly know whom to ask!
