| Visiting Avon |
|
|
Since 1880, when settlers first began to homestead in this former Ute Indian hunting ground, residents of Avon have been hypnotized by the sounds of the Eagle River and the sights of a unique mountain valley.
The earliest Anglo-American explorers to visit this area were most likely trappers in search of valuable beaver pelts that were used to make fashionable hats for folks back east. Homesteaders and settlers worked together in the late 1800s to produce grain and cattle, which were used to feed the hungry miners of nearby Red Cliff.
Irrigation ditches were dug using dynamite (a new, more powerful form of dynamite was patented in 1875 making their work a bit easier), and a horse-drawn “backhoe” called a fresno. These technological innovations created a flourishing economy in Avon.
Always looking to the future, Avon is currently developing a plan for redevelopment of Avon’s east and west town centers and to create a main street to tie it all together. On the west side of Avon, the redevelopment will complement the newly approved Westin Riverfront Development on the Eagle River. Public improvements from the development include a 1,200-passenger-per-hour gondola connecting to Beaver Creek Mountian, a pedestrian plaza, and a 5.6-acre riverfront park.
Avon Town Manager Larry Brooks explains, “From a long-term perspective, we want the area to serve as a multi-modal transportation hub with bus service, light rail, and a gondola accessing the mountain. It is in the long-term best interest of Avon to provide services that make it convenient for people to leave their automobiles at home.” However you get around once you are in Avon, make sure you get here to take in all that the town has to offer.
Heart of the Valley Known as the “Heart of the Valley” for its geographic location as well as its strong sense of community and family-friendly atmosphere, Avon offers something for everyone. No matter what you want to do, whether skiing, hiking, or enjoying a leisurely day in town, you’ll find that launching your mountain adventures from Avon is easy.
Avon offers more than a central starting point for the valley…there’s a lot to do right in town! In the summer, the 48-acre Harry A. Nottingham Park offers fun for the whole family. Rent a paddle boat, fish in the lake, walk around the park, or just relax on the grass and bask in the sunshine. In addition, Avon offers many special events like the Salute to the USA, the largest fireworks display in the Colorado Rockies; Avon’s Annual Egg Hunt; Dunk-n-Dash, a duathlon race series; and Lakeside Cinema, which offers free family movies in the park.
Across from the park is Avon’s Recreation Center, a 40,000-square-foot facility with a 140-foot indoor waterslide, 5-lane lap pool, state-of-the-art fitness equipment, and much more. Looking for a little more adventure? A short walk down the road will bring you to Avon’s new Whitewater Park. The three river features provide beginning, intermediate and advanced surfing opportunities for kayakers. There is also a public viewing area.
If you’re visiting in winter, Avon is a great base for all your cold-weather activities, including ice skating and old-fashioned pond hockey on Nottingham Lake. A quick trip on the free Gondola Express shuttle bus will bring you to Avon Station, Avon’s transportation hub, where you can catch the new Riverfront Gondola directly to Beaver Creek Landing. You’ll be on the mountain in just minutes!
No matter what time of year you come, Avon is the place to be. For more information visit avon.org.
